Learning Manifesto
My Passion
Creating is my passion, whether it is art, writing, or video content. The love of being an artist and an art teacher intertwines the joy of creation with the fulfillment of nurturing creativity in others. It's a journey where passion meets purpose, where every stroke of the brush or lesson taught becomes a celebration of artistic expression and a testament to the power of inspiration. I strongly believe that art goes beyond just drawing or painting. It acts as a portal to unlock creativity, assisting in problem-solving and nurturing critical thinking across different subjects.

As an educator and lifelong learner, my goal is focused on creating a leadership-oriented environment in both my classes and personal learning endeavors. By adopting Stephen Covey's Leader in Me approach, which emphasizes See, Do, and Get, I aim to guide students towards becoming leaders in their educational journey. The Leader in Me framework is purposefully designed to outline how we can attain desired outcomes in our classrooms and schools. Centered on the See-Do-Get cycle, this framework serves as a guide for achieving success (Franklin Covey 2024). In my classroom, I emphasize that everyone has the potential to be a leader. By demonstrating the academic and personal qualities I wish my students to embody, I anticipate measurable progress in return.
Learning, to me, is an active process of acquiring knowledge and information, followed by taking charge of how I implement what I learn in my personal and educational voyage. In my role as a teacher, I not only impart the knowledge I possess in my field to students but also guide them on how to apply the information to their individual learning and life encounters. When I introduce a new concept or art technique to the class, I first consolidate my own knowledge and fill in any gaps in my learning. Sometimes, I learn alongside the students, putting myself in their shoes. Upon completing my formal education to become a teacher, I embarked on a new journey of enhancing my teaching abilities. Continuous learning is crucial in every profession, leaving room for growth and progress. I strive to instill this value in my students as well.
I teach across seven different grade levels and interact with every student in the elementary school. It is both a privilege and a challenge to engage with and educate a wide range of students, providing me with diverse learning and teaching experiences. From learning about creativity from a preschooler to discovering a unique shading technique from a fifth grader, each encounter offers a valuable lesson. I believe in being transparent about my own learning process, openly admitting my mistakes. By doing so, I convey to my students the importance of continuous learning, growth, and improvement through acknowledging and learning from our mistakes.
Emerging issues related to digital learning and leading at the state, regional, national, and/or global context
Digital learning in the field of education is expanding on state, regional, and national scales due to technological advancements. Educational leaders acknowledge the necessity and advantages of digital learning, yet, like all innovations, there are both benefits and challenges involved. The increasing technological progress enables schools to offer a wider range of digital learning opportunities.
In the realm of elementary education, the integration of technology represents both a powerful tool and a profound responsibility. As educators we stand at the intersection of tradition and innovation, tasked with nuturing young minds while preparing them for a future that is increasingly digital and interconnected.
Positive Aspects and Challenges of Integrating Technology in Education Positive aspects include personalized learning, catering to different learning styles, and enhancing student engagement. Challenges involve the requirement for additional resources, time for training, software, and equipment. Teachers juggle multiple responsibilities in the classroom, and introducing technology may potentially increase their workload, leading to feelings of overwhelm. This situation calls for districts to devise innovative strategies to reduce teacher burnout.
What is right/wrong with education and what should the world do to enhance or fix it?
What I feel is wrong with education is standardized testing. I do believe there needs to be some accountability and assessment for what students learn, but I feel these tests hinder authentic learning by emphasizing on teaching the test and removing any choice students or teachers have in learning. Standardized testing can also have a negative impact on student confidence and adds more pressure to the students as well as the teachers. Standardized testing can help measure and track progress, however I feel they don’t always provide accurate data on the student’s abilities. Another problem I have seen with the STAAR test is how the questions are worded and presented. The way they have chosen to articulate the questions feels as if they are tricky or confusing on purpose.
I believe standardized testing is a key issue in education. While acknowledging the importance of accountability and assessing student learning, I find that these tests impede genuine learning by focusing on test preparation and eliminating the freedom of choice for both students and teachers. The emphasis on standardized testing can negatively affect student confidence, increasing pressure on students and teachers alike. While standardized testing can be useful for measuring and tracking progress, I think it may not always accurately reflect students' abilities. Additionally, I have observed challenges with the STAAR test in terms of question wording and presentation, which can come across as deliberately tricky or confusing.
In education, a significant issue is the insufficient funds allocated for teacher salaries and resources within school districts. From my own observations, there have been more budget cuts than increases in schools. Teachers find themselves with fewer classroom resources and often have to use their own money to buy supplies for their students. Despite the challenges in education, there are some positive aspects. Teachers generally invest a great deal of dedication and emotion into their work. Personally, I believe that forming strong relationships with students is crucial for being an effective educator. In the district where I am employed, I can confidently state that the administration prioritizes the students' needs when making decisions. To address these education challenges, a shift in mindset and compassion from policymakers is essential. Until then, teachers must continue providing students with the best emotional and academic support possible.
What are your core beliefs systems about digital learning and the impact you hope to make in your organization?
When it comes to digital learning, Covid highlighted our lack of preparedness for technology and change. In my three years as an art teacher, I've witnessed the impact of the pandemic on students. Many fundamental skills, like using scissors or glue, were lacking in younger students. However, we can learn and progress by adapting our technology strategy, as my school district has done. I believe that implementing blended learning consistently across all classrooms is essential. Consistency is key in enhancing students' skills as they transition from elementary to high school. I strongly believe that blended learning is the most effective method for students to benefit from the COVA framework.

Art class is known for its hands-on approach, and in my classroom, students get to explore drawing and painting techniques across various platforms. I incorporate modeling, videos, and digital drawing apps to enhance their artistic skills. I am constantly learning about new advancements to share with my students. As I progress in my teaching journey, my goal is to instill a growth mindset in students regarding digital learning and nurture a lifelong passion for exploration. While not everyone may share my enthusiasm for art, I aim to provide students with the necessary art education to form their own perspectives.
Conclusion
Learning has been an ever present, ever changing aspect of my life and digital learning has significantly transformed the education landscape. It provides unique opportunities for personalized learning, global collaboration, and access to extensive resources. Despite challenges in education and the digital divide of ensuring fair access, the advantages of digital learning in boosting engagement, flexibility, and preparing students for a technology-oriented future are clear. It takes innovation and a growth mindset to positively shape the minds of young learners and foster leaders in learning.
